OPINION: COLDPLAY SINGER DECLARES ISRAELI FANS “EQUAL HUMANS”

Wembley Stadium turned from a concert hall into a trial by mob when Coldplay frontman Chris Martin called two young Israeli fans “equal humans” on stage (see video at the end of the article).

Avia and Tal, pulled from the crowd in what should have been a magical fan moment, proudly declared they were from Israel. In an instant, a tidal wave of boos, groans, and gasps swept across the 90,000-strong audience.

Martin, instead of seizing the chance to defend them without qualification, delivered a line that made Jewish stomachs turn: “I’m very grateful that you’re here as humans… treating you as equal humans on Earth, regardless of where you come from.” He then added that he also welcomed Palestinians, insisting “we’re all equally human.”

It sounded noble, but it was poison.

Because no one should have to be granted humanity, not Black Americans once enslaved and branded as property in the United States, not Jews in Nazi Europe stripped of their names and reduced to tattooed numbers, and certainly not Israeli concertgoers in 2025 daring to exist openly as Jews in a world still obsessed with hating them.

Chris Martin may have thought he was calling for peace, but what he actually did was echo the same insidious logic that justified centuries of slavery and the Holocaust: that certain people must first be confirmed as “human” before being allowed to stand among the rest.

And the timing makes it even more grotesque.

On October 7th, 2023, Hamas terrorists stormed southern Israel and butchered more than 1,200 people, including hundreds of young men and women at the Nova music festival. That festival wasn’t a nationalist rally or a military camp, it was a peace festival, meant to send a message to the Israeli government that coexistence with Gazans was not only possible, but necessary. These young people were dancing, dreaming, and calling for unity.

Hamas repaid them with bullets, grenades, rape, and fire. The peace festival became a killing field, a grotesque echo of the past when joyful gatherings of Jews in Europe were raided and obliterated by Nazis who saw them as less than human.

And now, at Wembley, Chris Martin, one of the most famous voices in the world—told two young Israelis, in effect, the same thing history’s worst monsters told Jews and slaves: your humanity is conditional.

He didn’t honor the Nova victims. He didn’t mention the hundreds still held hostage. He didn’t speak about the Israelis who have spent nearly two years reliving October 7th in their nightmares. Instead, he acted as the benevolent arbiter, bestowing “equal human” status as if it were his to give.

That isn’t peace. That’s arrogance. That’s condescension. And that’s dehumanization.

The Israelis on stage, and the millions watching online, didn’t need Chris Martin’s blessing. They needed recognition of their suffering, acknowledgment of their humanity that should never have been in question, and solidarity with a people who have already buried too many young dreamers who believed in peace, like the Nova festival victims, whose only crime was dancing for hope.

Coldplay wanted to be a band that brings people together. But in that moment, Martin did the opposite. He reminded the world of slavery’s lash, of Auschwitz’s gates, and of the Nova stage covered in blood. He turned music into a sick sermon that Jews must still be told they are “equal humans.”

The boos at Wembley weren’t just the sound of a hostile crowd. They were the echo of history’s darkest hatreds, alive and amplified in 2025.
