Breaking: Israeli Media Says Carney May Rethink Palestinian State Recognition

Carney’s original announcement came in late July, but he reiterated the same conditions during a joint press conference with German Chancellor Annalena Baerbock in Berlin earlier this month. Standing beside Baerbock, Carney said: “This intention is predicated on the Palestinian Authority’s commitment to much-needed reforms, including the commitments by Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas to fundamentally reform its governance, to hold general elections in 2026 in which Hamas can play no part, and to demilitarize the Palestinian state.”

Now, Haaretz and Ynet are both reporting that Ottawa is weighing whether those requirements can realistically be met within the timeframe Carney set. According to these Israeli outlets, senior Canadian officials are in internal discussions about whether recognition should be delayed or its conditions stiffened, amid mounting pressure from Israel which has blasted the plan as a “reward for terror.”

For the moment, Carney’s public position remains unchanged as recently as the Berlin press conference he defended conditional recognition as a way of pressuring the Palestinian Authority toward reform. But the new Israeli reports suggest cracks may be appearing in Ottawa’s resolve.
