A visibly Jewish man was assaulted in Montreal’s Outremont neighbourhood on Sunday afternoon in what Federation CJA described as an antisemitic attack.
In a statement released Sunday evening, Federation CJA said the assailant shouted anti-Jewish slurs before physically attacking the victim. The organization’s Community Security Network (CSN) responded alongside the Service de police de la Ville de Montréal (SPVM), and the suspect was arrested.
Federation CJA said a police report has been filed and that the victim is receiving support and is reported to be okay.
“We are aware of a disturbing antisemitic attack that took place this afternoon in Outremont against a visibly Jewish member of our community,” the organization said. Federation CJA added that it would continue to monitor the situation and release additional information as it becomes available.
As of Sunday night, Montreal police had not publicly released details about the incident, including the exact location of the assault, the identity of the suspect, or what charges, if any, have been laid. Police have also not announced whether the investigation is being handled as a hate crime.
The assault comes less than 24 hours after a suspected arson destroyed Nöam, a kosher restaurant on Décarie Boulevard. That fire is being investigated by the SPVM’s arson and hate crime units, although police have not announced a motive.
