Montreal’s Jewish community has been battered by a week of relentless attacks — capped Friday when a 28-year-old man was dragged off in handcuffs after threatening to kill Jews in Saint-Laurent while screaming “Allah is king.”
The shocking outburst, caught on video and blasted across social media, shows the suspect unleashing a stream of abuse before turning on a man in a kippah and snarling: “We will kill you, you f—ing pig.” Witnesses flooded 911 with calls around 4:40 p.m., and police stormed Fraser and Saint-Louis streets to take him down. He now sits in custody, accused of threats and hate-fueled rants.
But this arrest is only the latest outrage in a city spiraling with anti-Jewish hate. Just days earlier, Jewish participants were banned and then unbanned from Montreal’s Pride Parade and then were ambushed with balloons filled with urine as they marched. The same week, a synagogue was desecrated, while a father was assaulted in front of his children at a local park in broad daylight.
“This isn’t random anymore,” one furious resident told The Montreal Jewish News. “This is open season on Jews in Montreal. First a shul is trashed, then families get attacked in parks, then we’re pelted with urine at Pride, and now someone screams ‘Allah is king’ and threatens to kill us on the street. Where are the police? Where is the government? Why are people still allowed to scream globalize the Intifada? This is globalizing the Intifada!”
Community leaders are warning the situation has reached a breaking point, with Jewish families now living in fear of walking their own neighborhoods and are calling upon all levels of governement to take concrete actions to curb the hate.
