The Jewish world is in mourning. Rabbi Berel Wein ZT”L — towering Rav, prolific historian, and one of the most influential Torah teachers of the modern era — has passed away at the age of 91.
The levaya will be held Sunday morning, 9:30 a.m. at Beis Knesset Hanassi in Jerusalem, with kevurah on Har HaZeisim, where generations of great leaders rest.
Born in Chicago into a proud Lithuanian rabbinic family, Rabbi Wein began his career as a successful attorney before walking away from the courtroom in 1964 to lead Beth Israel Congregation in Miami Beach. By 1973, he was in Monsey, New York, serving as Rav of Congregation Bais Torah for nearly a quarter-century while simultaneously shaping American Orthodoxy as Executive Vice President of the OU and head of its Kashrus Division.
In 1977, he founded Yeshiva Shaarei Torah in Suffern, transforming it into a powerhouse institution and serving as its Rosh Yeshiva for two decades.
After moving to Jerusalem in 1997, Rabbi Wein never slowed down. He became Mora D’asra of Beit Knesset Hanassi in 2002, all while continuing to write, teach, and record the shiurim and historical lectures that made him a household name across the Jewish world. His works — from Chikrei Halacha to sweeping volumes on Jewish history — inspired generations and reshaped how Jews view their past.
A global teacher, beloved Rav, and unparalleled historian, Rabbi Berel Wein leaves behind a legacy that will echo for centuries.
Baruch Dayan Ha’emes.
