An ordinary afternoon of shopping at Ottawa’s Baseline Kosher Loblaws turned violent when a Jewish woman in her seventies was stabbed in the torso. Police have confirmed the attack was unprovoked and are investigating whether it was motivated by hate. The victim, described by community leaders as a cherished member of the Jewish community, was taken to hospital in critical condition but was released later the same day.
The Jewish Federation of Ottawa issued a statement confirming that the victim belongs to the community. “We have all been deeply shaken by the stabbing incident that took place yesterday afternoon at the Baseline Kosher Loblaws,” the statement read. The Federation said it has been in constant contact with police, including the Hate and Bias Crime Unit, and confirmed investigators are considering the possibility that the crime was motivated by hate.
The stabbing immediately set off a coordinated security response. The Federation reported it has been working closely with the Ottawa Police Service, the Chief of Police, the Mayor’s Office, CIJA, and the Director of the National Security Program for the Jewish Security Network. Discussions with Loblaws management are underway as the community demands stronger measures to protect shoppers at the city’s only kosher certified supermarket. Plans are also being advanced to strengthen security at Jewish institutions across Ottawa, modeled on national frameworks already in place in other countries.
Police maintain there is no indication of a wider threat to Jewish facilities. Still, the incident has left the community unsettled. For many, the idea that an elderly woman could be attacked inside a kosher supermarket in broad daylight has undermined any sense of safety. One shopper put it simply: “If someone can walk into our Loblaws and stab a Jewish woman, what is stopping them from walking into a synagogue or a school?”
The suspect, a 71 year old man, has been charged with aggravated assault and possession of a dangerous weapon and appeared in court the following day. The investigation continues. The Federation has urged the community to remain vigilant and called for prayers for the victim. “Our thoughts and heartfelt wishes are with the victim and their loved ones,” the statement read. The stabbing has sent a clear message to Jewish residents of Ottawa. A simple grocery trip ended in violence, and the unanswered question now is not only why it happened, but what might follow.
